How Much Does a Refrigerator Weigh? A User-Friendly Guide

There are different types of refrigerators, from small ones to large ones. How much does a refrigerator weigh? This can vary depending on the size and type of refrigerator you have. If you’re thinking about buying a new one, then this blog post will help answer your question!

What Is the Average refrigerator Weight?

Usually, large full-size refrigerators weigh between 100 and 400 pounds. Averagely, such appliances weigh around 250 pounds. A general rule that you can follow regarding the weight of refrigerators is that a fridge weighs around 12 pounds per cubic foot of total capacity.

For example, if your refrigerator has 28 cubic feet of capacity, it means its weight will be around 336 pounds.

Furthermore, many factors affect the refrigerator’s total weight, such as the internal machine and engine, age, features, model, and more. Similarly, the additional features that you mostly find in new refrigerators also affect the overall weight.

For instance, if your fridge has an ice maker or a built-in touch screen, it will be heavier than older models. Besides, the weight also depends on how many doors/drawers your refrigerator has, and all such elements enhance the appliance’s total weight.

Another element that affects the refrigerator’s weight is size. Newer refrigerators are made with lightweight materials, and usually, their weight is less than the older models.

Now that you understand the basics of how much a refrigerator weighs let’s dive deep into the details.

French Door Refrigerators

Perhaps the most used refrigerator type on the market is the French Door Refrigerator. Usually, the French Door refrigerators have side-by-side double doors and a couple of drawers on the bottom side that are mostly used to store frozen goods. As for the weight, French Door refrigerators are the heaviest of all types, and their weight is between 230 to 390 pounds. A standards French Door Fridge weighs around 317 pounds on average. These fridges weigh 13 pounds per cubic foot of their total capacity.

Side-by-Side Refrigerators

Side-by-side models usually feature a freezer on one side and a regular fridge on the other side. These are also common these days, and people prefer them due to their unusual design.

Side-by-side refrigerators are heavy, but their overall weight is less than French Door Refrigerators. Usually, they weigh between 242 and 340 pounds, whereas their average weight is around 285 pounds. To sum up, these refrigerators averagely weigh around 12 pounds per cubic foot of their total capacity.

Classic Top Freezer Models

As compared to the others, top freezer refrigerators are a bit smaller and lighter than the other refrigerator types. Moreover, these models are more suitable for small families.

The Classic Top Freezer Models weigh between 117 and 220 pounds, while their average weight is around 166 pounds. Top freezers have an average weight of 10 pounds per cubic foot of total capacity.

Bottom Freezer

As the name states, Bottom freezer refrigerators have a freezer on the bottom side and a regular fridge on top. However, these are heavier than top-freezer refrigerators. Bottom freezer refrigerators are usually between 119 to 288 pounds, while on average, they weigh around 215 pounds. Their average weight is 11 pounds per cubic foot of total capacity.

Mini Fridge Weight

Mini fridges, like its name, have smaller sizes and compact dimensions, and they are the lightest of all refrigerator types. These units weigh between 22 and 95 pounds, whereas their average weight is around 60 pounds. Mini fridges averagely weigh around 13 pounds per cubic foot of total capacity.

Refrigerator Weight FAQs

Why Are Some Refrigerators So Heavy?

The refrigerator’s overall weight is dependent on a number of components and parts. The biggest factor that directly impacts the weight is their size. Full-sized refrigerators measure up to 70 inches (almost 6 feet) tall. Similarly, some of them come with insulated walls, and these walls are super thick and include heavy insulation often made up of rigid polyurethane foam.
Then a refrigerator has various mechanical components such as refrigerant, compressor, coils, door, drawer, etc., and all these are significant contributors. Hence most refrigerators are heavy.

Is it safe to put things On Top Of A Refrigerator?

Yes, you can, but it should not be heavy. The general rule of what to put on your refrigerator can be measured by your arms. A refrigerator is a solid appliance; hence it can bear some weight. To measure how much weight you can put over it, just lift an object above your head, and if you can, then no problem in placing them on the refrigerator.
However, ensure that the base of your fridge is stable and the object doesn’t block airflow around it. Additionally, you should remember that the things on top of the fridge might get hot; hence be careful when placing any item over your fridge.

How much does a standard fridge weigh in kg?

Averagely, French door and side-by-side refrigerators weigh around 113 – 158 kg. While Top freezer refrigerators averagely weigh between 80 – 136 kg. Besides, the Bottom freezer refrigerator’s average weight is between 80 – 260 kg. Mini-refrigerators are the lightest, and their weight is between 18-36 kg, depending on the specific model and size.

Can A Refrigerator Harm Your Floor?

Generally speaking, no issues if you place your fridge on your delicate floor regardless of the model’s weight. Floors and grounds are designed with strong materials with safety in mind, and they can hold some weight easily; hence there won’t be any issues even if your refrigerator is heavy.
However, if you have broken tiles or uneven, then your floor can get damaged. Similarly, it’s not advisable to put your fridge on a delicate wooden or vinyl floor as it might damage or scratch the floor. Additionally, be extra careful when you move or relocate the fridge, as your floor can get damaged while doing so.

What is the style with the smallest refrigerator weight?

The smallest and lightest refrigerator on the market is a mini-fridge. Other than that, the Top-Freezer Refrigerators are the lightest of the other styles.
