How To Install Electric Cooktop – Step by Step Guide

How To Install Electric Cooktop – Step by Step Guide

At a glance, installing an electric cooktop looks like an intimidating task. But, it is not in reality. And if you don’t know how to install an electric cooktop, this read answers all the queries related to the subject matter, and by the end, you will understand all about its installation. Just follow the simple steps given below in the right order, and you are good to go.

How to Install an Electric Cooktop – Complete Guide

The process includes a few steps, but every step is simple to perform. Follow this procedure in the given order to install your new electric cooktop by yourself.
Removing the Existing Cooktop
Start the process by removing your existing cooktop. Turn off the power source and disconnect all the attachments while disassembling the unit. It would be best if you disconnected all the wiring.
Available Space
Now measure the available space on your kitchen countertop. Usually, electric cooktops need 30 inches to 36 inches of space on your countertop with one feet clearance. Leave some spare space on all sides for the smooth working of the unit. If you want to know the exact clearance space, check the manual that comes with the cooktop.

The Junction Box
Next, check that you are using the correct junction box and it is located at the right place so that you can connect your cooktop easily. Like other kitchen appliances, electric cooktops also work well on 240 VAC junctions. However, if your cooktop’s requirements are different, you will have to call experts to install the new connection box. For the cooktop’s power requirements, check the manual or ask the makers.
In some cases, you will have to redesign the whole wiring according to your new cooktop’s requirements. For this purpose, we will advise you to hire a professional electrician as performing wiring tasks by yourself can be dangerous if you are not a professional electrician. Moreover, some electric cooktops work well on 30-amp circuits, while some require 40 or 50 amps.
Take the Measurements
Next, you will have to measure the cooktop and confirm it with the available space. When measuring the cooktop, measure its length and width, and leave 1 inch or 2 inches on each side.
Now it’s time to drill the holes for electric wiring and cables. If there is already a hole in your kitchen countertop, check whether it can accommodate all the cables and wires. If that’s not the case, you will have to alter the hole; however, if the hole is too wide, screw-in shims around the hole to limit the opening. Shims are long metal pieces that you can easily purchase from any local hardware store.
If you have a granite countertop in your kitchen, you will have to take help from a professional for cutting the counter and make the hole. We will not recommend drilling the hole in granite counters by yourself as it is too hard to cut.
Setting up your new Electric Cooktop
Keep all the accessories out of the pack and install the clips. Start hanging them from the upper side of the edge. These are used to keep the cooktop in place. Put it in the appropriate place and tight it using standard screws that usually come with the cooktop.
Now, after placing the cooktop in the appropriate place, put the wires through the holes. Ensures that all cables are placed into the spring clips.
Connections Of Cooktop
After placing the unit correctly, you can connect all the electric cables and wires back to its power source. Keep the power off when doing the cable work.
The general rule is that all red and black wires are hot wires, whereas the white wires are neutral. You will also find a green wire in the electric cooktop that is used for grounding. Before connecting any wire to the power supply, read the product manual as the wire colors differ from model to model. Usually, new electric cooktops have detailed instructions regarding the connection along with diagrams and charts. Hence you can review them in case of any difficulty.
Tie all the wires before connecting them to the power source. Don’t tangle the wires and keep them as straight as possible. Ensure that all wires are covered and not touching each other. There should be no bare or broken present; confirm that as well to prevent any unforeseen incident. You can also use the wire nut for this purpose.
Installation of your new electric cooktop is almost done. Now is the time to set up the burners and other accessories that come with the cooktop. Turn on the power and confirm that everything is in working condition. If all is well, you can enjoy cooking on your new electric cooktop.

In the End:

You can easily install an electric cooktop at any place in your kitchen that has adequate clearance. Ideally, we will recommend you install it on the place where you have 30 to 32 inches of clearance. Similarly, it would be better if you leave some spare space on all sides of cooktops up to 1 or 2 feet for the cooktop’s smooth working.
Lastly, check the manufacturer’s recommendation about the minimum clearance as it may vary by model and manufacturer.
